Curating an Art Exhibit

With a satisfying list of nine Newbery Medals in place, Frederick Melcher and the leaders of the Children’s Literature Section of the American Library Association felt comfortable with the beginnings of what had become an annual, nationally recognized award. They were pleased that their overarching aim to bring more recognition to children’s books, to attract new talent to the field, and to heighten librarians’ interest in the American Library Association (ALA) was off to a good start. Each year had brought redefined procedures but also, and more excitingly, increased interest in the winning books…
